The first sport it was worn in was soccer because the Cardinal loved the soccer program as he played when he was youngest growing up in the mean streets of Chicago. Cardinal Lewy started this tradition by having a big eloquent party. Each player was given a fighting Irish sweatshirt at the beginning of the party and was required to find an Alum from the school who wore the same numbered jersey as they did in past years. When the player would find the Alum, he would give him his own fighting Irish sweatshirt.

The following year, the Cardinal thought it would be a good idea for all the student athletes to start wearing the fighting Irish sweatshirt. He thought it would bring a sense of pride and togetherness and something the entire student athlete could share together.

From this point on the fighting Irish sweatshirt brought the school over twenty national championships in the NCAAs over the next 10 years. There were three won in football, two won in soccer, two won in women’s basketball, one in track, one in men’s swimming and one in women’s volleyball.

The Cardinal claims the fighting Irish sweatshirt and the togetherness it brought put these championships in line. The Irish had not won any national championships in the ten previous years. The fighting Irish sweatshirt will go down in history as the “thing” that brought winning back to Notre Dame.
